A gifted showman and self-promoter, singer/songwriter/choreographer Todrick Hall's clever musical videos drew a huge audience on YouTube, which led to mainstream perform on television and his own ambitious musical, "Straight Outta Oz" (2016). Born April 4, 1985 on a farm in Arlington, Texas, Hall's first brush with fame came as a contestant on the ninth season of "American Idol" (Fox, 2002-2016), during which he reached the semi-final rounds in 2010 before being voted out of the competition. When the exposure afforded by the series failed to generate any stardom, Hall returned to Texas, where he began writing and directing in offbeat musical videos for YouTube. The usually over-the-top and over-the-top character YouTube subscribers have grown to love established as Funky Dineva, is taking a backseat to a more stripped down version of its creator Quentin Latham. In his latest upload titled, "Straight Ebony Men Are The Problem In The Black Community,"Latham is inviting Black straight men and his audience into a conversation that is both necessary and in some circles controversial.
Latham uses the Black barbershop as the backdrop for the 30-minute video in which he addresses direct Black men and the lessons he learned from them about manhood, homophobia/transphobia and misogynoir at every stage of his maturation. And in the current political climate of Black Lives Matter, Latham also addresses the Jet communities insistence of Black LGBTQ people to place a hierarchy on our intersecting identities for what some believe is a necessary sacrifice for the greater good of (straight) Black liberation.
