NEW YORK — Even Christian Slater was shocked, imagining himself as the clue character in the murderous tabloid tale that is “King Cobra.”

“This is loosely based on a true story about something that happened in 2007 in the world of the gay porn industry,” said Slater (“Mr. Robot”). “That’s why it’s been called the ‘Boogie Nights’ of the gay porn industry.”

An actor since he was 9, Slater takes on his first gay role in this movie, now available on demand.

“I worked with James Franco on ‘The Adderall Diaries,’ and we really got along successfully together and were looking for something else to undertake . He presented this project to me.”

Slater, 47, sees “King Cobra” as similar to his offbeat casting in Lars von Trier’s controversial 2013 film “Nymphomaniac.” Both, he said, “are a distinct kind of role, an opportunity to step outside my comfort zone.

“One line I have in this film which I really identified with was, ‘It’s fun to engage with who we are.’ That’s an actor’s job. If I do the same things over and over again, it

James Franco, Christian Slater talk playing gay in 'King Cobra'

Christian Slater says male lover porn drama King Cobra avoids the "stereotypical nonsense" of gay characters.

Speaking with Variety, Slater said that he has matured in how he views such characters since watching Brokeback Mountain.

"I recall when I saw Brokeback Mountain and I had such a visceral reaction to that film, and thought, 'Oh my god, I could never accomplish anything like that,'" Slater said. "And as I've gotten older, I ponder I have gotten less judgmental about things and hopefully a little bit more mature about these subject matters."

"I've never played a homosexual before and I just didn't want to, I guess, bring any stereotypical nonsense to it, or execute any kind of caricature-y type things that I've seen in other films," he added. "I just wanted to be a human being who happens to like juvenile men."

The film, which premiered Saturday at the Tribeca Production Festival in Recent York City to positive reviews, follows the early porn career of Sean Paul Lockhart, who worked exclusively for Cobra Video under the name Brent Corrigan. Cobra Video's Bryan Kocis (played by Slater) was murdered after he

Christian Slater on Playing Homosexual in ‘King Cobra’: ‘You Gotta Feel the Apprehend and Do It Anyway’

Christian Slater sat down with Conan O'Brien to discuss about his role as a gay porn producer in the upcoming James Franco murder film King Cobra, which is based on the murder of producer Bryan Kocis in 2007.

But not before he and Conan engaged in some light-hearted teasing that felt more enjoy 2006 than 2016.

Said Slater of getting intimate with a man on film: “You gotta feel the fear and do it anyway. That's how I got through it.”

Added Conan: “As an actor that's very challenging.”

But Slater wised up, eventually:

“It was. It definitely was…when James Franco asked me if I'd be interested in doing this project I examine it and I…went hmm, wow…I really do include to think about this, this is definitely out of my wheelhouse. I did have a lot of anxiety and dread about doing something like this, but then I just said, ‘I'm an actor!' I asked my wife she said you should absolutely go do it. I dove right in.”

‘King Cobra’ Trailer: Christian Slater and James Franco Star in This True-Crime Gay Porn Drama

“The Boogie Nights of gay porn” sounds like a high bar to live up to, but, judging from the trailer, it looks like King Cobra will do just that. It’s a true crime drama about a man breaking onto the gay internet porn scene in the mid-2000s, full of sex, intrigue, manipulation, betrayal, Christian Slater, James Franco, and, really, what more could you want?

King Cobra is based on Peter A. Conway and Andrew E. Stoner’s book Cobra Killer: Same-sex attracted Porn, Murder, and the Manhunt to Bring the Killers to Justice, a title which should tell you right now that this movie is essential viewing. The psychosexual turmoil dazzled audiences at Tribeca earlier this year, and now the film is finally heading to theaters. Here’s the entire synopsis:

Based on a stranger-than-fiction correct story, King Cobra is a deliciously dark, twisted plunge into the behind-the-scenes world of the pornography industry. It’s 2006, YouTube is in its infancy, and internet porn is still behind a paywall. Taking the stage name Brent Corrigan, a fresh-faced, w
