Company History
The Gay Group of Companies in its current establishment was incorporated in 1971 though the family has been in the General Contracting industry in one shape or another for well over 100 years. In the tardy 1880’s and well into the early 1900’s the Gay Family started off as a builder of barns and houses. Since it’s incorporation in 1971, the Gay Group of Companies has constructed all types of Industrial, Commercial, Institutional (ICI) and Residential Projects and over the years has gradually come to specialize in all areas of the industry from brand new buildings to demolitions, restorations and renovations of buildings of all sorts including extensive tenant’s improvements.
Our claim to fame of sorts in the Oshawa area is our direct involvement with Colonel Sam (R.S.) McLaughlin. Our family has built such personal items for Mr. McLaughlin including all additions to the main structure of his home (Parkwood), his farm and barn near Tyrone, Ont
Picket in Front of U.S. Army Building, First-Ever U.S. Gay Rights Activism
History
A picket line in front of the U.S. Army Building in Lower Manhattan on September 19, 1964, was later identified as the first public demonstration for same-sex attracted rights in the Together States by Barbara Gittings, co-founder of the Daughters of Bilitis, New York Chapter, in 1958. Organized by Randy Wicker of the Homosexual League of Recent York (HLNY), and the New York City League for Sexual Freedom (LSF), it protested the military’s treatment of lgbtq+ people – including rejection, less-than-honorable discharges, and violation of privacy through a policy of sending queer men’s records to current and potential employers. Historian David Carter has called Wicker “the first militant activist on the East Coast.”
Randolfe Hayden Wicker (born Charles Gervin Hayden, Jr., in 1938 – he changed his name at the seek of his father), a student at the University of Texas, had spent the summer of 1958 volunteering for the Mattachine World of New York (MSNY). He was under age at 20, but he lied to the group. He first stirred up controve

The Gay Village
The Gay Village is a truly singular and vibrant area of the capital centre. Located next to the Rochdale Canal, it has a mix of residential, commercial and leisure destinations. It's home to the city’s lesbian, lgbtq+, bisexual and trans communities. The flourishing gay culture created a safe and welcoming village-like group. And it's world-famous for its night-time and leisure scene.
We've collaborated with the local community to create an move plan for the Gay Village. It looks at how we can preserve the character and spirit of the area. And how we ensure the needs of the LGBTQ+ community are at the heart of anything taking place in the Village.
As part of our commitment to the Gay Village, a series of listening exercises contain taken place. So we better know the priorities, wants and needs of the community who live in, perform and visit it.
There are a range of proposals to enhance the area in the limited and long-term. They include:
- Developing a neighbourhood management plan for improvements to the physical environment
- Replac
