With LGBT Pride Month around the corner, we love seeing our favorite artists participate in events that help depict their communities. With that in consciousness, it was recently announced (May 9) that Jhonny Caz, Grupo Firme’s third vocalist, will be crowned the “king” of Mexico City’s Gay Pride 2022. The event will take place on June 25 – and we can’t be any more excited about it!
“Our king of this year’s Gay Parade is confirmed,” the Mexico City Same-sex attracted Pride’s organization Instagram post revealed. According to BandaMax, the “Ya Supérame” collective member will also be part of this year’s talent lineup.
A Twitter user said: “It’s excellent because [of] the visibility that Jhonny has given the LGBT community, [about the] stigmas and ideas at an international level. [He] is doing very well!”
In 2020, Caz clarified rumors about him being same-sex attracted after the group’s “Enloquéceme” cover, which had fans speculating if he was acting or not when the video showed him creature attracted to a male. After taking a nine-month break from performing, Grupo Firme is feeling renewed and ready to party again with the 2024 La Última Peda Tour. These past several months, lead singer Eduin Caz worried his fans with his announcement that he would retire from the band. In a video teaser of the upcoming tour, he wakes up from a hangover and says, “How can this be la última peda if we’re just getting started?”
“When we rouse up hungover, we always say, ‘We’re not going to drink anymore. This is la última peda,'” Caz tells Remezcla. “And that’s not true! You always go support to drinking. That’s why our tour is called ‘La Última Peda,’ because it’s never the last one.”
The party appeared to be over for Eduin while Grupo Firme was taking moment off. Last year, he revealed that he would retire from performing with the band. As the pandemic reached North America in early 2020, the regional Mexican band Grupo Firme faced a watershed moment: “Innovate or die,” says 27-year-old frontman Eduin Caz. To avoid getting upended by the ensuing lockdowns, the seven-piece act traveled to Caz’s home in Mazatlán, Mexico; rented a studio that was available only to band members; and recorded a breakout album to “keep the momentum going,” he says. “We couldn’t let what we had worked so strenuous to build just fall apart.”
That album, Nos Divertimos Logrando Lo Imposible (“We Enjoy Doing the Impossible”) — Grupo Firme’s latest — arrived in December, helping the band cross the 1 billion career streams threshold in the United States, according to MRC Data. And that’s just one part of its success. Grupo Firme has now logged 11 entries on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart and recently became the third-ever act to score an entry on the Billboard Hot 100 with a regional Mexican song, “Ya Supérame,” in October. At the 2021 Premios de la Radio Awards on Nov. 10, the band earned top honors with f
