Jason Kelce says he greeted 'hate with hate' by smashing phone over slur against brother

Former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce apologized Monday for smashing a person’s phone after an anti-gay slur was used to refer to his brother, Kansas Urban area Chiefs tight conclude Travis Kelce.

“Listen, I’m not happy with anything that took place. I’m not proud of it,” Jason Kelce said on ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown,” the pregame show on which he is a panelist.

“And in a heated moment, I chose to greet hate with hate. And I just don’t ponder that that’s a productive thing. I really don’t,” Kelce said.

The incident happened Saturday outside Penn State’s Beaver Stadium in Pennsylvania at the game between Penn State and Ohio State.

Video on social media and verified by NBC News shows Kelce walking outside the stadium holding a case of beer while he is surrounded by fans.

In the background, a man can be heard shouting at Kelce and then using a homophobic slur to describe Travis Kelce in reference to his connection with pop superstar Taylor Swift.

In the videos, Jason Kelce appears to twist around, grab the man’s phone, smash it to the ground, pick it up again and walk away.

Former Philadelphia Eagles center and current ESPN analyst Jason Kelce apologized on the network on Monday night after he got into an incident with a fan over the weekend.

Kelce said he "chose to greet hate with hate" when he was confronted by a fan in Articulate College, Pennsylvania, on Saturday ahead of Ohio State's defeat over Penn Mention. Kelce smashed a fan's phone to the ground on Saturday morning after that fan used a homophobic slur that was directed at Kelce's brother, Travis.

“I’m not delighted with anything that took place. I’m not proud of it,” Kelce said on ESPN. “In a heated moment, I chose to greet hate with hate, and I just don’t believe that’s a generative thing. I really don’t. I don’t think that it leads to discourse and it’s the right way to go about things. In that moment, I fell down to a level that I shouldn’t have."

Kelce was on campus at Penn State to emerge on ESPN's "College GameDay" on Saturday morning. As he was walking through tailgates before the game, which Ohio State won 20-13, a fan chased after him and confronted him while appearing to clip on his phone.

Kelce, now a football analyst with ESPN, attended the Penn State vs. Ohio State game Saturday when videos of the incident on social media, which were verified by NBC News, circulated.

Multiple angles showed Kelce walking through the crowd with a case of beer in his hand when a man in the background could be heard shouting in Kelce's direction before using the slur.

Kelce then appeared to turn around, grab the device, smash it on the earth, pick it up off the floor and walk away. A different angle appeared to exhibit the man chase after Kelce asking for the phone assist, to which words were exchanged.

Another angle showed Kelce repeating the slur back at the man three times in scrutinize form after picking up the phone off the ground.

The man's identity -- whether he was a student or general spectator -- was not immediately recognizable.

ESPN did not have a comment when initially reached out to by NBC10 Philadelphia.
