Nestled between Beverly Hills and Hollywood and covering an area of only about two square miles, West Hollywood is home to more than 34 thousand people.

More than a third of the population identifies as Lesbian, Gay, Multi-attracted , or Transgender and coming up this weekend, as it has done for 47 years, WeHo will host the Pride Pride and Festival.

The little city has played an oversized role in history in the gay community. Karen Tongson knows a lot about that rich heritage. She teaches gender studies at USC, and when she stopped by Take Two, she told A Martinez all about the early history of West Hollywood, what sets it apart from other L.A. cities when it comes to LGBT history and more.

Roots

"In the commencing, this part of town was welcoming to people of all communities, LGBT communities in particular, because West Hollywood was unincorporated into the city of LA particularly in the '20s...

It mattered a lot because that meant that the LAPD was not policing that particular area of town and so gambling houses, entertainment zones, basically licentious amusement zones began to grow in that area. As with most LGBT communities or hubs around the world, pe

LGBTQ+ West Hollywood

At the base of the Hollywood Hills, the city of West Hollywood is the center of LGBTQ+ Los Angeles. In 1984, West Hollywood became the first majority-gay municipality in the country, and ever since, its opulent tradition of lgbtq+ fest and acceptance has been enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

2024 marks the 40th anniversary of this milestone, and West Hollywood will commemorate that and the many linear LGBTQ+ policies that followed it with 40 Days of Pride and the return of the recently reinvigorated WeHo Pride event. With the theme of “Pride Starts Here,” everything kicks off on Harvey Milk Day (May 22) and runs through June 30 with programming that includes the WeHo Celebration Weekend Parade, the Dyke March, the WeHo Pride Arts Festival and more.

Nightlife, Burgers, and Performative Bingo

With LGBTQ+ residents comprising more than 40 percent of the 1.9-square-mile people and crosswalks are painted as welcoming rainbows, it goes without saying that the entire area is LGBTQ+-friendly. What’s more Route 66 than a classic 24-hour diner? Devour a plate of Disco Fries at 3 a.m. at Kitchen24. This always-open neighborhood diner has all the cl
